Chief Advancement Officer

CURE is seeking candidates for an exceptional opportunity for a Chief Advancement Officer.  The Chief Advancement Officer oversees all development functions, including strategic planning, marketing and donor engagement, public relations and corporate communications, business development, and related functions.  The Chief Advancement Officer fosters a culture of authentic engagement and accountable stewardship within the organization and ensures that the people, systems, and procedures within the development, marketing and communications, and grants management areas support program development and overall financial health of the organization.  

The Chief Advancement Officer plans, coordinates and ensures implementation of strategies to develop partners and contributions to support the organization.  The Chief Advancement Officer also ensures the development and maintenance of appropriate systems to fund development including, but not limited to, relationship management, marketing and communications, and grants research and acquisition.  The Chief Advancement Officer leads efforts to maintain accountability and compliance standards for partners and funding sources.  

The Chief Advancement Officer leads and manages advancement programs and opportunities for the organization, as well as manages schedules and budgets for the advancement function.  The Chief Advancement Officer works collaboratively with other senior leaders in the organization to make executive-level decisions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participates with the President and Chief Executive Officer, other Executive Officers, the management team and the Board of Directors to define and align the organization's mission and direction, giving critical consideration to how the advancement functions help to define and align the organization's mission and direction:
    • ​Provides vital input in short- and long-term strategic and operational planning within the organization.
    • Helps leadership identify and address issues within the advancement functions that challenge and support health and effectiveness.
    • Ensures that development, marketing and communications, and grants management are carried out in keeping with the organization's values, mission, vision and plans.
    • Participates with the President and Chief Executive Officer, other Executive Officers and the Board of Directors in charting the organization's advancement course.
    • Evaluates the effect of internal and external forces on the organization and its fund development, and recommends short- and long-range advancement plans and programs that support the organization's values, mission and operational objectives.
    • Helps establish performance measures, monitors results and helps the President and Chief Executive Officer, advancement team and the Board of Directors evaluate the effectiveness of the organization's advancement program.
    • Establishes revenue goals and implements performance measures, objectives, and benchmarks for the advancement programs. 
    • Uses data analytics to drive decision making for the team and to inform senior leadership about programs that support the highest professional standards as well as new initiatives.
  • Provides general oversight of all of the organization's advancement activities, manages the day-to-day operations of the advancement function, and monitors adequacy of activities through coordination with co-workers and contractors:
    • ​Leads the advancement team in maintaining accountability standards to partners and ensures stewardship of financial, human and capital resources.
    • Ensures stability by creating a working environment that is rewarding to co-workers.
    • Appropriately represents the organization to partners, prospects, regulators, media and the Board of Directors.
    • Oversees the supervision of direct reports, which includes work assignments, training, talent development, and enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for employment actions; motivates a diverse team of co-workers to achieve peak productivity and performance.  
  • Designs and ensures implementation of cost-effective advancement programs, employing economy while maintaining optimum quality and solid return on investment:
    • ​Ensures proper planning including goal setting, strategy identification, benchmarking and evaluation to support advancement.
    • Combines advancement resources in such a way as to maximize quantity and quality to obtain a set of results.
    • Assists Board members, President and Chief Executive Officer, other Executive Officers and other co-workers identify, cultivate and engage existing and prospective relationships.
    • Leads and ensures the development and writing of foundation and government proposals.
    • Oversees and supports the planning, development and implementation of the organization's marketing strategies, communications, and public relations activities, both internal and external.  Directs the efforts of the marketing, communications and public relations team(s) and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the organization.  
    • Ensures articulation of the organization's desired image and position, ensures consistent communication of image and position throughout the organization, and ensures communication of image and position to all constituents, both internal and external.  Seeks to protect and enhance the brand and presence of the organization.  
    • Provides support and resources for programs on marketing, communications and public relations.

Qualified candidates for this position will possess the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent amount of work related experience.  
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in some combination of major gift development, marketing, communications, grants management or related field, with successful relationship building and strategic abilities demonstrated throughout one's career.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience leading and managing others, specifically in regard to relationship management and strategy development.
