CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda, a Private-Not-For-Profit (PNFP) Christian hospital specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery and Integrated Spiritual Ministry, is seeking an experienced Individual for the Full-time position of Nurse Practice Instructor

Position Title             :    Nurse Practice Instructor

Reports to                  :    Nurse Manager

Supervises                 :    All Nursing staff in collaboration with the Nurse-In charge

Duty Station               :    CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda

POSITION OVERVIEW:

  • To build nursing skills, knowledge and attitude that support quality of nursing care and patient safety, regularly carrying out Clinical nursing competence needs assessment, plan for meeting these needs and monitor patient nursing care outcomes.
  • A nurse clinical leadership position, takes responsibility for the nursing Practice and Nursing Quality Outcomes within CURE Hospital.

Responsibilities & Roles

Nursing Practice Needs Assessment

  • Monitor the outcomes for quality nursing care and ensure nursing process is implemented.
  • Carry out a nursing practice needs assessment and formulate a clinical learning plan.
  • Carry out nursing policies’ implementation audits on a quarterly basis to identify practice gaps.
  • Ad-hoc spot checks
  • Review current evidence-based literature and ensure that the current practice is well informed.
  • Take lead in root cause analyses of incidences and sentinel events, pertaining to nursing practice.
  • Monthly review of infection prevention and control data trends for areas of capacity building for nursing staff.
  • Participate in regular review of patient satisfaction survey and feedback.
  • Participate in the selection and recruitment of nurses in liaison with the nurse manager.

Clinical teaching and mentorship

  • Develop training and learning modules for all nurses.
  • Develop and implement schedules for continued nursing education based on clinical
  • nursing practice needs.
  • Develop and implement nursing competency-based orientation modules for all newly employed/deployed nurses.
  • Develop a schedule and skills check tools for nursing skills sessions for all nurses.
  • Ensure that all nurses have the training and skills that match their job requirements and areas of practice.
  • Ensure that all nurses have valid acute care courses certification.

Support for Nursing Practices

  • Formulate and review clinical nursing policies & procedure manual for nursing department and ensure staff training.
  • Ensure implementation of nursing process around the clock, for quality nursing care outcomes.
  • Develop and strengthen patient care handover and communication processes.
  • Ensure implementation of nursing surgical safety measures (pre & postoperative).
  • Strengthen and implement safe medication administration and monitoring processes
  • Strengthen effective nursing documentation and develop the relevant tools/forms.
  • Implement patient safety measures are put in place to include prevention of falls, medication errors, etc.
  • Develop patient/family teaching materials and implement patient/ family education processes.
  • Take occasional shifts on the ward and work directly with patients to maintain clinical knowledge and skills.

Monitoring Nursing Care Implementation

  • Monitor and keep to date the Nursing Quality indicators dashboard, and use the data & information for improvement of nursing processes.
  • Develop nursing audit tools for nursing procedures.
  • Implement closed and open chart audits of nursing documentation and use outcomes for improvement.
  • Identify nursing practice gaps and conduct a QI evidence based project annually.
  • Generate a monthly report on all nursing practice activities.

Quality & Patient Safety

  • Participate in the QPS monthly quorums.
  • Support and participate in various QPS committees, and internal audits
  • Ensure implementation of Safe Care standards requirements (especially the Clinical and nursing knowledge and skill development).
  • Any other duties assigned within the CURE International Nursing policies.

Occupational Health & Safety

  • All staff are expected to work in such a way that does not cause injury to themselves, other staff members, or customers.
  • Following & complying with H&S policies, and processes & applying them to their own work activities, including using/wearing Personal Protective Equipment as required.
  • Participating in activities directed at preventing harm & promoting well-being in the workplace Identifying, reporting & self-managing hazards where appropriate.
  • Early and accurate reporting of incidents at work and raising issues of concern when identified

Education and Professional Development

  • Ensures own professional development to enhance own competencies through self-assessment and/or formal performance appraisal regularly according to the hospital (and own) professional development plan
  • Maintains professional records that provide evidence of competency and lifelong learning.
  • Identifies personal development and training needs and works with the supervisor to, help facilitate education and professional development where possible.
  • Maintains a good quality learning environment that supports continuing professional development, creativity, and being proactive.

Spiritual Ministry

  • Participates in the hospital’s Spiritual Ministry programs.
  • Attend chapel and departmental bible studies with staff (depending on weekly schedule)

Key Performance Indicators

  • 0% Incidence of In-patient Ward Hospital Acquired Infections.
  • Annual planner for Nursing Capacity building initiatives
  • 100% Nursing skills strengthening.
  • 100% formulation & Implementation on Clinical Nursing Policies & Procedures
  • 100% implementation of Nursing Competency Based Orientation.
  • Nursing training modules development & Implementation.
  • Evidence based nursing practice QI project

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a Recognized institution.
  • At least 5 years of post-education experience, with at least 2 years in pediatric nursing.
  • Registration/Licensure by the in-country nursing regulation body.
  • Experience in clinical teaching and mentorship.
  • Experience in quality management certification or accreditation (Safe Care /JCIA).
  • Experience in clinical policies and procedures formulation.
  • Christian maturity exhibiting a close relationship with the Lord as evidenced by a strong prayer life and a love for the Word.
