POSITION OVERVIEW
A Laboratory Assistant is a member of the multidisciplinary team responsible for supporting all laboratory work in the Hospital. 

Supports in the provision of information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests; receiving, typing, testing, and recording blood bank inventories

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Assisting in Collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample.
  • Support the Organizing work by matching computer orders with specimen labelling; sorting specimens; checking labelling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols, and report any maintenance needs.
  • Support and serves as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Support with the Provision of test results for patient diagnosis and treatment equipment; performing manual methods of differentials.
  • Support the surgeons and clinicians with information before surgery of patient infection by performing technical procedures for the identification or susceptibility of bacteria, parasites, fungi, and mycobacteria.
  • Assisting in Ensuring that the patient of receiving compatible blood/blood components by completing blood typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, and antibody identification procedures.
  • Assisting in ensuring that future retrieval of patient transfusion information by preparing patient packets and maintaining blood bank database.
  • Assisting the Contribution to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Assisting in Maintaining patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential.
  • Support in Serving and protecting the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, and national requirements, and standards.
  • Support in Enhancing laboratory services and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Supporting in the Preparation of vaccines and serums by standard laboratory methods, testing for virus inactivity and sterility.
  • Chasing results

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certificate or Diploma in Laboratory technician from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a hospital or clinic setting
