CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda, a Private-Not-For-Profit (PNFP) Christian hospital specialized in Pediatric Neurosurgery and Integrated Spiritual Ministry, is seeking an experienced Individual for the full time position of Carpenter.

Position Title:                 Hospital Carpenter

Reports to:                     Facilities & Construction Manager

Supervises:                    None

Duty Station:                 CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda

Department:                  Non - Medical

Location:                       Mbale, Uganda

Duration:                       Fixed Term

Position Overview:

  • To construct, repair and maintain wooden structures such as assistive devices, furniture, equipment, wall partitions, roofs and other parts of hospital buildings; using hand and power tools according to written and oral instructions.

Responsibilities And Duties
Carpentry and Facility Function

  • Periodically inspects hospital furniture, wooden structures and building framework consisting of wood or metal for any damages and recommends maintenance/repair/replacement plan
  • Calculates quantity of materials needed, selects stock, tools and supplies for the repair of hospital the carpentry works in the hospital.
  • Construct and or supervises the making of hospital furniture, wooden structures and building framework consisting of wood or metal, using power and hand tools
  • Repairs Hospital furniture, wooden structures and building framework consisting of wood or metal. 
  • Install Floors, walls and roofs using materials such as wood, steel, metal, concrete and plastics

Assistive Device Fabrication

  • Makes assistive devices for the physiotherapy department according to written and oral instructions provided by the physiotherapist
  • Repairs and maintains rehabilitation and adaptive equipment.

Procurement Function

  • Assists procurement in identifying and purchase of quality materials, supplies, tools and equipment needed for the carpentry work.

Collaboration function

  • Collaborates with contractors, construction workers, electricians, plumbers etc during implementation or execution of carpentry related works
  • Inventory monitoring and Record Keeping function   
  • Maintains an inventory of all carpentry tools and equipment in the hospital and ensures they are kept in a good working condition.
  • Maintain records of all maintenance and fabrication work performed.

Continuing Professional Development Activities

  • Identifies and pursues continuing professional development activities in line with their position and maintains professional records that provide evidence of activities completed.
  • Works with one’s supervisor to guide in mentorship and coaching for continual professional growth.

Occupational Health & Safety Function

  • Following & complying with H&S policies, processes & applying them to your own work activities, including using/wearing Personal Protective Equipment as required.
  • Participating in activities directed at preventing harm & promoting well-being in the workplace Identifying, reporting & self-managing hazards where appropriate.

Spiritual Ministry

  • Participates in the hospital’s Spiritual Ministry programs.
  • Attend chapel and departmental bible studies with staff (depending on weekly schedule)

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • A certificate in Carpentry and Joinery. A diploma is an added advantage
  • Knowledge and ability to make patients’ assistive devices for physiotherapy is an 
  • added advantage
  • At least 4 years of work experience
  • Building Skills
  • Ability to use electrical tools
  • Ability to organize and priorities job/work orders
  • Ability to read construction drawings
  • Knowledge, Skills Competences & Abilities:
  • Willingness and ability to adopt new knowledge
  • Flexible attitude to duties and to hours of work with ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Highly organized and meticulous
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously and in a

This position is full-time fixed-term renewable and based in Mbale.
