POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Medical Technologist responsible for performing procedures and tests, operating laboratory equipment, analyzing results, and ensuring accuracy and quality control. Their work is essential in supporting doctors’ clinical decisions and maintaining patient care standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform all laboratory duties including, but not limited to, drawing blood, specimens and performing laboratory tests on patients per physician request.  
  2. Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments.
  3. Participate and perform proficiency training (internal/external), competency assessment, quality assurance activities, and other laboratory quality improvement programs. 
  4. Document internal quality control procedures and take appropriate corrective actions when control results are outside acceptable limits.
  5. Maintain specimen integrity by following proper collection, transportation, and testing procedures.
  6. Assist with laboratory inventory, ordering supplies, and managing reagents.
  7. Respond to and resolve problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely manner.  
  8. Assist in the investigation, documentation, and resolution of laboratory incidents, errors, complaints, and nonconformities.
  9. Report issues related to malfunctioning of equipment in a timely manner.  
  10. Validate and verify laboratory results prior to release and prompt reporting of critical and significant results to the appropriate physician or authorized hospital personnel. 
  11. Operate and properly maintain laboratory information system (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS)
  12. Represent the hospital in medical laboratory-related activities as required.  
  13. Ensure compliance with safety protocols, infection control measures, and laboratory regulations impacting the operations of the laboratory.  
  14. Maintain clear records of all activity and perform regular control and calibration testing of equipment.
  15. Participate in emergency and after-hours laboratory services when assigned and respond appropriately to urgent laboratory requests. 
  16. Participate in continuing professional development, seminars, training, competency assessments, and other activities necessary to maintain and improve technical proficiency.
  17. Assist in the preparation of the laboratory for internal and external audits, inspections, accreditation, and regulatory assessments.
  18. Perform other laboratory-related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Chief Medical Technologist, Clinical Support Service Manager, or authorized supervisor.
  19. Knowledge of laboratory safety, infection prevention and control, biosafety, and proper handling of biological specimens.
  20. Must have the ability to recognize abnormal, critical, or questionable results and appropriately escalate concerns.
  21. Knowledge of quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory quality management principles.
  22. Proficiency in specimen collection, processing, testing, result verification, and documentation.
  23. Ability to operate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and automated analyzers within the scope of training and competency.
  24. Basic computer literacy and ability to use laboratory information systems, hospital information systems, and other electronic documentation systems.
  25. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive laboratory information professionally.
  26. Ability to work collaboratively with the laboratory team and other healthcare professionals.

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH:

  • Uphold the highest standards of quality and efficiency in line with hospital quality programs (e.g. Safecare, DOH, etc.) requirements.
  • Ensure a safe and secure work environment by strictly adhering to infection prevention and control protocols such as but not limited to handwashing, wearing of PPE, etc.
  • Identifying, reporting & self-managing hazards where appropriate.
  • Early and accurate reporting of incidents at work and raising issues of concern when identified.
  • Commit to sustainable and eco-friendly work practices by minimizing waste, optimizing resource usage, and actively participating in initiatives that promote environmental stewardship.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Minimum Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology from a qualified, recognized institution. 
  2. Licenses/Certifications: Current PRC (Professional Regulation Commission) license
  3. Minimum Experience: At least 1 year experience as a Medical Technologist in a hospital environment preferred    

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

  1. Strong analytical, critical thinking skills and documentation skills
  2. Strong communication skills, especially with those of different cultures.
  3. Comfortable using medical technologies and lab equipment
  4. Broad knowledge of basic chemistry techniques
